A group of Linnton Neighborhood Emergency Team members gathered on September 5th to construct handwashing stations to be utilized in the aftermath of an earthquake. As described in our May newsletter from a NET training, following an earthquake or similar catastrophe it is critical to use clean sanitation procedures to avoid infection.
The Decoy Restaurant donated clean 5-gallon buckets to the cause, a sufficient sized container for twenty neighbors. They are actually a fairly easy DIY project with an assortment of material you can pick up at a local hardware store.
The handwashing stations are a useful tool to have on hand in the case of a natural disaster. Dysentery and other diseases are caused by infectious germs in the digestive tract and can create severe dehydration and electrolyte loss which can become life threatening.
