Anti-Racism — Locally

By Nancy Hiser

Do you struggle, knowing our society is racist, but aren’t sure what to do next?

If you haven’t found resources to become better educated, here are some that have been personally enlightening: “13th“ (film), “1619” and “Scene on Radio: Season 2—Seeing White” (podcasts), and “Me and White Supremacy” (book). Multnomah County Library also offers a lengthy list for all ages.

Showing Up for Racial Justice (SURJ), an organization committed to building a racially just society, has a chapter in St Johns that meets online. SURJ’s call: “We must have an inclusive, open-hearted approach to organizing, calling people into this work rather than creating barriers to participation . . .” Here are 3 reasons to follow up: Engaging with other supportive people on this path is valuable. Volunteer opportunities to support Black and Indigenous peoples’ communities are offered. Taking political action is another way to make your voice heard. It’s a welcoming group.
