A hardcore team of 20+ volunteers on Sunday, July 12 powered through clearing almost a quarter-mile of brush, dirt, and weeds from the sidewalk along St. Helens Rd. between the Linnton Trail turnout and NW Hoge Ave. Go for a walk and check it out!
Volunteers included Amy Juaron; Aaron Bynum; Peder, Theresa, and Ryan Trelstad; Ivan McClean; Kathryn, John, and Harper Slothower; Robin, Derek, Eliza, and Declan McCurdy; Ben and Debbie Keefer; Quinn and Brian Hoop; and Mike and Amido. There were others whose names we, unfortunately, forgot to record.
For a work party that was organized without much advance notice, I was impressed. Luckily several people brought weed trimmers, which helped a lot. Some put in muscle power, shoveling away years of dirt that had eroded downhill. Several pickup loads of brush were hauled away to the dump since there was limited space to pile vegetation to compost.
Just a reminder, according to City code, it’s the adjoining property owner’s responsibility to maintain clear passage on public right of way sidewalks. There are other areas along the highway where English ivy and black berry plants are narrowing passage, so please stay vigilant and proactive about clearing your sidewalks so all can safely travel.
