May membership drive

By Sarah Taylor

Everyone in Linnton is invited to participate in Linnton Neighborhood Association meetings and activities. However, State and City rules require that people formally join an organization to be a member. Being a member means you get to vote on neighborhood issues, help elect neighborhood association leadership and run for the Board of Directors.

Membership is open to anyone who lives, owns a business, or represents a nonprofit in Linnton. For residents, both homeowners and renters are invited to join. Signing up as a member and providing contact info also ensures you’ll receive important community email notices.

There are several ways you can sign up to be a member. The easiest is to simply check-off you want to be a member on the sign-in sheet at each meeting. You can also go online and complete the membership form on our district coalition’s website at nwnw.org. Click on “Get Involved” where you’ll find “Apply to be a Member.” Or you can email brian.g.hoop@gmail.com and he’ll note you’re a member on our contact list.

Why the Name of our Neighborhood
Association Matters

A Neighborhood Association is a connecting thread between the city, the county, the state and our neighborhoods. It’s important that it quickly describes the area where we live so busy departments and agencies can quickly recognize the region we are speaking from. Linnton is one hill amongst eight hills and three marinas. We continue to seek a name that describes all the neighborhoods we represent.

Additionally, Linnton is named after a man who never came to Oregon and was author of legislation that displaced all our local Indigenous tribes. Many places in Oregon were named after him in an apparent attempt to encourage him to pass Indigenous removal and the free give away of their land. Let’s continue to look creatively for a name for the neighborhood association (not the hills or town) that best describes the whole neighborhood.
