EFFORTS TO CLEAR VEGETATION TO REDUCE WILDFIRE FUELS CONTINUES – VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR SEPTEMBER 17 EVENT AT MA OLSEN GARDEN

By Nancy Hiser

Marshall Johnson, a Natural Resource Ecologist with Portland Parks, and Recreation and Alejandro Orizola. Forest Park Conservancy, will join us at the September 7th Linnton neighborhood meeting to provide more information and answer your questions about FEMA funded projects to clear plant fuel that could contribute to wildfire risks in Linnton.

Multiple crews are scheduled to tackle projects this fall and winter around Linnton including ODOT crews that will continue brushing – another word for trimming back invasives and overgrowth – along the sidewalk adjoining St. Helens Rd. PBOT crews will brush along NW 1st St. on the Linnton Hill, where there is significant growth of invasive ivies and blackberries on public right of way.

Linnton volunteers are needed Saturday, September 17th to help trim back vegetation at Ma Olsen Garden, the public right-of-way behind the bus stop at NW 107th Ave. The garden, named after the owner of a former store knocked down by ODOT when Hwy 30 was widened in the 60’s, has been adopted by Linnton residents who have lovingly removed invasives over the past 15 years and restored the site with native flora.

West Multnomah Soil and Water Conservation District, through the Canopy Weed Program, provides limited resources – funding and crews – to assist willing property owners with treatments for ivy and clematis growing up trees, but not for comprehensive ground ivy.
