We live in a floating home on the Multnomah Channel near Linnton. This time of year the river is teeming with life. Goslings are born and swim by our house everyday. The river otters are quietly taking care of their pups, the salmon are running, and everything is blooming.
Then, in the middle of April, our neighbor spotted something lifeless floating in the water. It seemed so out of place with the rest of the river. The police were called and our neighbors made sure the body was kept from floating down the river.
The response was quick but respectful. The tone somber with many questions. Later, we found out the body was that of a 24-year-old woman who, apparently, had taken her own life. The river kept her body submerged since last November.
The river is strong. It supports our home, provides life and beauty all around us. But make no mistake, the opposite is also true. Nature can be harsh at times and we should all be respectful of its strength. We are sad about the life lost, but glad that her family has closure. The experience will be remembered by all of us.
