Effort to Replace Median Street Trees Beginning

By Ed Jones

Linnton’s section of Hwy 30 has four tree-filled medians. Like the improved cross walk at 107th, the medians were built and planted in the early 2000’s after the death of a child brought public and ODOT attention to the need for improved pedestrian safety in Linnton.

As part of that project, the Linnton Neighborhood Association agreed to maintain the trees. Over the years many have been replaced by the association. But the last few years have been hard on the trees; time, weather and traffic have taken their toll, and efforts to keep up have fallen behind. Eight trees are now gone or damaged beyond repair and others are hurting.

The LNA does have some funds to support work in the medians and new efforts are underway. Questions are circulating about how many should be replaced and with what new tree species, more of the existing Hawthornes or something else from the city’s approved tree list?

The subject will be on the agenda at the May first membership meeting.
