Update on Willamette River Greenway
easement effort

By Sarah Taylor

We hope that many of our readers have had an opportunity to enjoy the new river trail on NW 107th in Linnton. This trail offers lovely views of the Willamette River, the St. John’s Bridge and the Portland Harbor.

This trail connects to the State’s Willamette Greenway Trail system as you head west. In the coming months, we hope to gain access to this trail system through an easement along the river, which may eventually lead us to access the river. River easements and setbacks not only protect our riverways and provide vital habitat but allow us to connect to our river history in ways denied for decades.

Part of the funds provided to the Linnton Neighborhood Association as a result of a congressionally approved COVID relief bill last spring will help improve this river system and make it accessible as habitat and a place of restoration. The funds will include installation of a fence that separates the Greenway from industry.

Our ability to safely integrate nature into our working waterfront is an exciting possibility for the future of our river.
